Becoming a Scientist Is About Grit, Not Grades
January 23rd, 2021: The School of Science & Psychology's Biotechnology team organised a webinar entitled The Future is Science, with Dr Shahidee Zainal Abidin. Winner of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting 2018, Dr Shahidee shared his experiences in scientific research and encouraged young students to get involved in the discipline by studying a biotechnology degree.
The esteemed speaker who has won numerous awards and completed a one-year attachment at Harvard Medical School had encouraging words for students. “I wasn’t the best student, and graduated with a 2.82 - but the way I learned was different. I learned from trial and error and idea research, compared to the person who can learn in the class”, he told participants. “It’s about grit - if you have patience, perseverance and passion, you can be a good scientist”.
